Experience the beauty of the Raurimu Spiral by rail!
Running since 2020, the Raurimu Spiral train trip is one of New Zealand’s must-do activities! A ticket gives you the opportunity to experience the Raurimu Spiral, an engineering feat that will see you come from Tongariro National Park back to Taumarunui.
We are now partnered with Glenbook Vintage Railway, so travel back in time in our 1930s carriages, hauled by a 1960s engine! In addition, from October onwards we have also partnered with the Taumaranui Cosmopolitan Club to offer a spit roast lamb meal after the trip – included in the ticket price!
All proceeds from the journey go to local charities.
Bookings are essential, so make sure to reserve your seat to make sure everything is taken care of – from meeting you outside the Taumarunui train station on Hakiaha Street, travelling to the Tongariro National Park, getting on the train and coming back down to Taumarunui. From October onwards, you can then head over to the Taumaranui Cosmopolitan Club for your free late lunch starting at 1.30pm (the lunch is included in your ticket price!)
In total, the whole trip takes about 2 hours, and will take in some of the breathtaking scenery and amazing engineering design of the spiral itself. We only have the capacity for 20 people per trip, so make sure you book early to avoid disappointment.
- 11:00am – we are taken by chartered bus from Taumaranui train station to National Park (takes about an hour), where you’ll have a little time to look around National Park train station, visit the cafe and use the amenities.
- 12:10pm – 1:15pm (approx) – through the Raurimu spiral back to Taumaranui on the historic train trip.
This endeavour has been put together thanks to the efforts of local entrepreneur Peter Davison, and is also proudly supported by:
- Glenbrook Vintage Railway (https://www.gvr.org.nz/)
- Ruapehu District Council
- Ian McKelvie (MP)
- The Business Association of Taumarunui
